In fall of 2022, a call went out to the local Port Angeles community. The region-wide Orca Recovery Event was happening and the partners of the Ediz Hook Restoration Project needed volunteers to help replant dune grass seedlings among the driftwood barriers of the newly restored beach. Restoring the dune grasses on the southern shore of Ediz Hook is just one small part of a large, multi-phase, collaborative restoration project. It is designed to improve habitats for fish and bird populations while supporting educational and recreational opportunities for the entire community. Gardeners, families, retirees, students, and professionals all answered the call and in just a few short hours on a sunny fall day; thousands of new seedlings were planted.
